Lammermuir Oak Wood Trees
These trees originate from parent trees within the Rammer Cleugh SSSI, one of the finest examples of Upland Native Oak Woodland in the Lammermuir Hills.
For over two centuries these woods supplied:
Timber for boat building in Dunbar
Charcoal, fencing and fuel through coppicing and pollarding
High-quality stems for construction and furniture
The woodland lies among Iron Age settlements, and its exceptional biodiversity and condition reflects generations of careful, sensitive management.
The Lammermuirs are inseparable from Sir Walter Scott, whose Bride of Lammermoor draws heavily on this wild landscape and native woodlands. Its emotional power later inspired Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor, one of the greatest works of European music.
