Flodden Sycamore Trees
These trees are from a remarkable, large, hansom tree believed to have been planted after the Battle of Flodden (1513) — the last great medieval battle.
King James IV and much of the Scottish nobility were killed in the Battle of Flodden, an event remembered annually with deep respect, particularly during Coldstream Civic Week.
The parent tree’s strength, age and stature reflect centuries of careful care by estate staff and the wonderful character of the local community.
In 2024, seed was spectfully and carefully gathered by The Coldstreamer, high up in the crown.
Sycamore is a generous species — providing many benefits …early spring nectar for pollinators, rich insect life for birds, fine timber prized for musical instruments and very efficient Carbon Capture.
