Collingwood Oak Trees
After the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) when command had passed to Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood on Nelson’s death he feared Britain no longer had enough oak to build more battleships, Men of War to protect the nation.
On his estate at Hethpool, Northumberland he gathered acorns from the finest native trees in the College Valley and with his wife Sarah and their dog Bounce, he planted them on Bell Hill, creating what became known as the Collingwood Oaks.
After his death at sea, Sarah with Bounce, family and friends continued gathering and planting and one area contains 200 oaks, each representing and respecting a British ship that fought at Trafalgar.
The parent trees from which Admiral Collingwood collected acorns feature in the legendary Chevy Chase ballad, rooted in centuries of conflict and hunting in the Cheviots.
