Dalkeith Palace Trees
Dalkeith Palace’s Old Oak Woodland is of national importance containing over 500 veteran Pedunculate oaks, planted between 1580 – 1617,being carefully managed over centuries to enhance landscape, provide shelter and hunting grounds between the North and South Esk rivers and favored by King James vi.
At its heart stands the Michael Oak, estimated to be 1,000 years old.
These woods have hosted generations of royalty, including Mary, Queen of Scots who visited on many occasions whilst living nearby at Little France, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Queen Victoria & George IV, Edward VII and George V.
The trees’ age and structure create exceptional habitat, with hollow stems, deadwood and rich ground flora supporting remarkable biodiversity.
A tree rooted in royalty, ecology, and time itself.
